Caffeine is the most common stimulant we ingest on a regular basis. While a moderate amount of caffeine is usually harmless, in some people excessive caffeine intake can cause anxiety, insomnia, headaches, and stomach irritation.
We test for two markers of caffeine sensitivity in our panel: CYP1A2 and VDR.
CYP1A2 codes for an enzyme that governs the rate at which caffeine is broken down and excreted, therefore it is this gene that determines wether you are a fast or slow metaboliser of caffeine.
Slow metabolisers are generally advised to consume less caffeine to avoid the potential unpleasant effects of excess caffeine intake.
VDR is included in the panel because variations in this gene determine if excessive caffeine intake has a negative effect on bone mineral density. Carriers of the sensitive version of this gene are also advised to limit their caffeine intake, regardless of wether they are fast or slow metabolisers.
